Hotels in Ayodhya and other stay types
Visitors to Ayodhya choose between hotels and resorts, dharamshalas, homestays and tented cottage camps. Prices, free rooms and whether foreign guests are accepted differ from house to house, so check each property yourself.
The main sights are separate places: Ram Mandir, Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan and the ghats along the Saryu. No single address is next to all of them. Look at the route on a map before you book, and do not count on a short walk or on a taxi that can stop at the temple gate. If you want a guided day with transport, see the Ayodhya temple tours and day trips.

Stay types compared
What each type offers and what to ask before you pay.
| Type | What it is | Check before you book |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels and resorts | Rooms with front desk service, in different categories | Exact address, route to the temple area, check-in time, taxes and extra charges |
| Dharamshalas | Pilgrim guesthouses run for visitors to the temples | Whether foreign guests are accepted, booking method, rules on stay length and arrival time |
| Homestays | Rooms in a family house under the state bed and breakfast policy | Registration, number of rooms, child and extra bed rules, meal arrangements |
| Tented cottages | Cottages with air conditioning, a sanitary area and hot and cold water | Opening dates for your travel season, distance to the river and the city |
For most first-time visitors, a hotel or a registered homestay with a confirmed address and a written booking is the simplest choice. A dharamshala suits pilgrims who want a simple room and know the rules of the house.
Dharamshala in Ayodhya
The traditional pilgrim stay.
A dharamshala is a guesthouse that serves pilgrims. Dharamshalas are one of the main accommodation types in Ayodhya. Rules differ from house to house. Some set limits on the length of your stay or on arrival times, and not every dharamshala accepts foreign guests. Ask by phone or message before you travel, and keep the confirmation. Do not assume that a dharamshala has a free room at festival time.
Prices vary across the city. Ask for the nightly rate, taxes and any charge for an extra bed in writing, and compare two or three options before you decide.
Homestays and tented cottages
Two newer ways to stay.
Homestays
Uttar Pradesh published a Bed and Breakfast and Homestay Policy in 2025. It started with a limit of 6 rooms per property, and a revised limit of 8 rooms and 16 beds may apply. Ask the host which rule applies and whether the property is registered. A homestay can be a good base if you want a quiet room and a home-cooked breakfast.
Tented cottages
Tented cottage camps offer air-conditioned cottages with a sanitary area and hot and cold water. They are a seasonal concept, so confirm that your dates fall inside the opening period for 2026 or 2027 before you book.
Near the river or inside the city
A stay near the Saryu puts the ghats and evening Aarti within reach. A stay in the city can be closer to the lanes around Hanuman Garhi and Kanak Bhawan. Look at the Saryu ghats before you decide which side suits you.
How to choose where to stay in Ayodhya
Five checks that save trouble on arrival.
Route to the temple area
Road closures and crowd control can change how far a vehicle can go. A private car with a driver is no guarantee of a special drop-off point. Ask your host how guests usually reach the temple and how long the last stretch on foot takes.
Station and airport
The airport is about 10 km from Ayodhya Dham, and the city has two main stations, Ayodhya Dham and Ayodhya Cantt. They are different stations, so ask which one your train uses. See getting to Ayodhya and the airport guide.
Season
Festival weeks fill rooms and change rules. Book early for Ram Navami and for the lamp festival around Diwali, and ask about cancellation terms. Heat and monsoon affect comfort too, so read the weather by month.
Darshan timings
Temple doors open early in the morning. If you plan an early visit, ask whether the property allows night arrival and early departure. Check the current schedule on the darshan timings page.
Written confirmation
Get the booking in writing with the address, the price, the dates and the cancellation terms. Keep a phone number for the property and a copy of the confirmation on your phone.
Plan the rest of your trip
Stay is one part of the plan.
Hotels in Ayodhya: frequently asked questions
Where should I stay in Ayodhya?
That depends on your plan. Stay near the river if the evening Aarti at the ghats matters most. Stay closer to the city lanes if short ways to Hanuman Garhi and Kanak Bhawan matter more. Check the route to the temple area on a map before you book.
What is a dharamshala in Ayodhya?
It is a pilgrim guesthouse. Ask about house rules and whether foreign guests are accepted before you travel.
Can I stay in a homestay in Ayodhya?
Yes. Uttar Pradesh has a Bed and Breakfast and Homestay Policy from 2025. Homestays are small, with a cap of 6 to 8 rooms depending on the current rule. Ask the host about registration and meals.
Are there tented camps in Ayodhya?
Tented cottage camps exist, with air-conditioned cottages, sanitary facilities and hot and cold water. They may not be open all year, so confirm the season before you book.
Can I walk from my hotel to Ram Mandir?
Do not assume so. Walking distance depends on the exact address, and road closures can change the route. Ask the property for the current route and the time it takes.
